You Are My Sunshine

By Sydney Moon

Veterans Day is a National Holiday in the United States created to honor veterans who have served or are serving in the United States armed forces. As Cole stated in the podcast, when the holiday was first observed, it was called Armistice Day, which references the end of World War I when the Armistice with Germany went into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The National Holiday is currently observed annually on 11 November, and is considered a federal holiday, thus Federal workers and a number of students have the Holiday off from work/school.

For our family, we remember our Pap, Beth's Father, who served in Korea. So...new fun fact that we just found out! Pap actually didn't serve in the Korean War. That was before his time. He actually served in the Army in Korea, but after the Korean war ended. He worked on the tanks after they became damaged from going in and out of the jungle. It sounded like a constant stream of work, what with the fact that the tanks weren't built for the jungle environment and seemed to have a lot of maintenance challenges.

After an honorable discharge, Pap came back to the US. He was a hard worker, and loved to talk with people. He was a wonderful Grandfather! After Pap passed away, we found a bunch of his documents and pictures from when he served in the Army. It was fun and interesting to observe glimpses of Pap's life through the old documents!

My cousin created these wonderful collages for Pap's Memorial Service, in honor of him and what he meant to us. My Grandmother used to tell him "You are my sunshine" :)

There are many more stories and history of veterans who have served in the US Army - many of them can be found at the Arlington Cemetery located in Arlington, Virginia. Sydney goes into further discussion of the cemetery in the Podcast. They have a wonderful website, if you wish to check it out: https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/#/
